De Matos Ryan Borges (DMRB) is a Lisbon-based design studio led by architect Raquel Borges. DMRB was established in 2021 in partnership with De Matos Ryan an award-winning London based architectural practice, founded in 1999 by José Esteves de Matos and Angus Morrogh-Ryan, both graduates of Cambridge and Harvard Universities. Running studios in both the UK and Portugal enables De Matos Ryan Borges to maintain our European perspective and deliver the service and results that international clients want and expect.
During 15 years working at De Matos Ryan in London, Raquel was project architect on a wide range of award-winning projects that demonstrate the studios’ ability to combine expertise in architecture, landscape and interiors to design imaginative and well-detailed buildings and spaces, often within historically sensitive contexts. The talented, dedicated and culturally diverse team across both studios have a wealth of experience in the high-end hotel, residential and cultural sectors. We work hard to ensure that our projects are implicitly sustainable and have a positive impact on the community.
DMRB brings the best of De Matos Ryan’s long-established working methods into practice in Portugal. We offer full ‘turnkey’ architectural, interior and lead designer services, from helping our clients find a site, through planning and regulatory approvals, to design development and information, supporting the tender process, supervising construction, handover and post-occupancy evaluation. Our in-depth knowledge of navigating local planning and regulatory systems, as well as the latest construction standards and risk management procedures, keeps projects on track.
The Practice Directors have an established reputation for leading collaborative consultant teams to find creative solutions to meet the specific needs and ambitions of leading commercial and institutional clients, ensuring the successful completion of their projects on budget and programme. Our relationship with clients is always underpinned by transparency and trust, built on regular reporting and open communication. We believe that the process from start to finish should be enjoyable for everyone.
Our past clients include: A Curious Group of Hotels, the Experimental Group of hotels, Strada restaurant group, The Victoria & Albert Musuem, Sadlers Wells Theatre, British Film Institute and British Library.
Our work has received numerous awards including the RIBA, Civic Trust, European Hotel Design, FX, D&AD and Roses Design awards.
