Ten years after the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union, Brexit continues to shape trade, investment and business relations between the UK and Portugal.
As part of Antena 1’s feature marking this milestone, Rui Almeida, Chair of the British-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce (BPCC), shared his thoughts in a Portuguese-language radio interview on the evolving landscape.
Reflecting on the broader context of UK–Portugal relations, the interview highlighted how both countries have had to adapt their relationship in response to a changing geopolitical and economic environment, describing UK–Portugal relations as “a place of stability in a turbulent process”.
“Today, as it always has been, [the UK] continues to represent a very important source of foreign investment, our main country of origin for tourism, one of the countries to which we export the most, particularly services, and therefore the relationship and the foundations between Portugal and the UK were and still are in place.” – Rui Almeida
The interview further explores how broader political developments in the UK could influence future relations and a reproachment between the two countries.
